Democrats should restore capitalism’s promise, not abandon it for socialism

(CNN)I believe in market-based capitalism. It is the greatest job creation, productivity and innovation machine ever created. The genius of America is that we allowed capitalism to work its magic while also moderating it with appropriate regulation, tax policy, workers’ rights and the building of great societal infrastructure, including a safety net. According to a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released this week just 18% of Americans view the term socialism positively, while 50% see it in a negative light. For that reason, President Trump would love for the 2020 election to be about socialism, as its one of the few things in the country that has a lower approval rating than he does. Fresh off Congress roundly rejecting his demands …

Elizabeth Warren’s call to disband tech giants is a step in the right direction

(CNN)Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Elizabeth Warren argued in a blog post on Friday that “it’s time to break up Amazon, Google, and Facebook.” The reason, she says, is because they have become such large monopolies that they’re stifling competition from smaller startups and therefore impeding opportunities and innovation. Sen. Warren is right that the business monopolies these companies enjoy are bad for other American businesses and ultimately reduce the choices of consumers. But there’s another kind of power these tech companies all have that is an even bigger threat: their monopoly on information. Warren’s proposal doesn’t fully fix this larger problem. Elon Musk’s adventure in space

(CNN)On Saturday, SpaceX launched the unmanned Crew Dragon capsule on a Falcon 9 rocket. A little more than 24 hours later, the Crew Dragon docked successfully with the International Space Station. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his team are right to celebrate this tremendous achievement. Then as now, the Russians and United States were leaders in space. What’s different about the SpaceX docking feat is that it’s a private company, not a government, that’s in charge of the operation. After 2011, when NASA retired the Space Shuttle after 30 years and 135 flights, astronauts had to be ferried to and from the ISS on Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Developing a new crewed capability has been a priority for NASA, and by …

On Brexit, the EU isn’t strong enough to be weak right now

London (CNN)When Donald Tusk, President of the EU Council, tweeted on Wednesday that there was a “special place in hell” for those who promoted Brexit without a plan, the reaction from certain corners of London was furious. Europe has endured a near-unprecedented migration crisis. The euro area is still recovering from the aftermath of the global financial crisis — which hit Greece so hard it needed the largest bailout in history. It is coping with populist movements becoming increasingly powerful in national elections, forcing mainstream politicians to ape once-fringe political ideas. It has among its ranks countries like Poland and Hungary openly undermining the rule of law. And it is looking at Rome, wondering if — maybe when — Italy’s …

Bernie Sanders in 2020? Progressives are split

(CNN)On Saturday, Twitter was abuzz with the news that Bernie Sanders, the independent Vermont senator, might be “imminently,” as Yahoo News reported, jumping into the 2020 race for president. In 2016, I supported Sanders in the Democratic presidential primary. After Hillary Clinton became the nominee, however, I became a surrogate for the Clinton campaign, speaking on her behalf to the Arab and Muslim American community since I’m a member of both. So when I speak of the reaction to Sanders’ possible run in 2020, I do this as someone who supported him in the past for championing issues that leading Democrats were not discussing at the time — from railing against the “billionaire class” — which he declared “controls the …

‘Spider-verse’ gets the science right — and wrong

(CNN)(Warning: Contains mild spoilers) Using the data it generated, which is basically billions of photographs of particle collisions, we discovered the Higgs boson, the last missing piece of the standard model. The standard model is our best understanding of the subatomic world, which consists of particles far smaller than atoms. The scientific data we’ve recorded has resulted in over 2,000 scientific papers, with no signs of slowing down. Visually, the part of the equipment seen on the screen in the Spider-Verse isn’t actually the LHC itself, but rather a particular piece of scientific apparatus called the Compact Muon Solenoid, or CMS. In the real world, the LHC accelerates protons and collides them together. In contrast, the CMS is essentially a …

GOPer: With a wildly flailing president, it’s up to Congress to end the shutdown

(CNN)With this government shutdown now the longest in American history, it’s time to bring it to an end. Of course, this is Washington, and Trump and his administration have other ideas. He and members of his team have toyed with the idea of declaring a national emergency, though Trump has said he is not quite ready to do so. Trump has also been presented with proposals to redirect military construction or disaster emergency funds to build a wall — without congressional authorization. If either of these two options were invoked, a legal challenge would be filed immediately, further inflaming the ongoing crisis in political leadership. Such extreme proposals would trample Congress’ Article I power of the purse authority, set a …
